King Charles issued a warning to the UK press about their “unique and vital role” within society. The message was shared ahead of a reception for regional media at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday evening. The lavish reception welcomed 400 guests from a wide range of media organisations across the country.
The monarch, 76, highlighted the importance of regional media “in all its forms” – particularly “in these uncertain times”. Speaking of the media industry, King Charles stressed that it is “more important than ever” in an era when “too much focus is given to that which divides us”.
During his speech, the King also referenced a speech that he gave in 2002, one which marked the tercentenary of Britain’s first daily national newspaper. In his speech 23 years ago, the monarch described the press as being at the forefront of “defining, describing and celebrating the more profound values of our nation”.
Speaking of the impact of regional news outlets, he said that it “helps amplify and reaffirm the rights and responsibilities we all share”.
Praising the UK media, he added, “[It] shines a light in dark corners, exposing injustice and wrongdoing”, before adding, “Above all, it helps strengthen our communities, in times of joy and at moments of sorrow.”
Despite the media as “a cornerstone of our democracy” at best, he also reflected on the challenges faced.
He emphasised: “You won’t always get it right. A free media is one that will and does make mistakes”.
Conducting another stark warning, he added: “For without a thriving and financially robust regional media, we would all be the poorer.”
Following royal tradition, the message was signed off formally as “Charles R”.
