King Charles’ controversial message to Lionesses branded ‘disappointing’ at trophy parade | Football | Sport

Before the final on Sunday, a row erupted after the King shared a good-luck message on X (formerly Twitter). It was accompanied by images of most of the players but Michelle Agyemang was a notable absentee, causing controversy with supporters.

Agyemang was a key player for England, scoring late goals against Sweden and Italy in the knockout stages. After the final, the 19-year-old was named the best young player of the tournament.

Kassandra De Jesus, who attended Tuesday’s celebrations with her two young sons, told Express Sport that she was disappointed with Agyemang’s omission from the images.

“She kind of saved the day a few times, didn’t she? She was amazing,” said De Jesus after naming Agyemang as one of her favourite players alongside Kelly.

“That’s very disappointing. Yeah, I mean, I’m not surprised but it’s just how it is. It is a shame and to be honest I’m just glad that she didn’t take any of the penalties because I know how it can be if she misses.

“Like the other lady [Jess Carter] who kind of had to back down and take her name off social media because of the abuse that she received. It’s quite sad and I’m disappointed but I’m not surprised. I’m disappointed.”

It comes after England manager Sarina Wiegman said it was ‘regrettable’ that Agyemang was excluded from the images, but added that she was convinced it was not on purpose.

“I think that would never, ever be intentional,” said Wiegman. “I think the message from the Royal Family is that they really, really support us, and we really appreciate that. It’s unfortunate that [Agyemang] is not on the picture, but there’s all good intentions.”

The message from the King read: “Your journey to this stage has been nothing short of remarkable, showcasing the skill, determination (and test of nerve!) for which your team is so rightly celebrated.

“Knowing the Lionesses’ fighting spirit, I suspect we are in for another thrilling encounter on Sunday. Your achievements continue to inspire countless girls and women across the nation, proving once again that with dedication and teamwork, anything is possible.”
