Kevin Muscat’s Rangers contract details emerge as boss speaks out | Football | Sport

Kevin Muscat is set to take the reins at Rangers and has agreed a multi-year contract with the Ibrox side. Following successful negotiations over the past 48 hours, a broad agreement has been reached with his representatives. Rangers are now in talks with Shanghai Port regarding a compensation package.

The 52-year-old is not expected to make the move to Glasgow until next month, once the Chinese Super League concludes. Muscat currently has Shanghai Port at the top of the table and he wants to lead them to another title.

He is expected to bring his coaches Ross Aloisi and Vince Lerardo with him to Scotland. The Daily Record revealed earlier this week that Neil McCann is poised for a significant role in Muscat’s backroom team at Ibrox.

McCann could also temporarily take charge of the team until Muscat finishes the season in China.

The imminent arrival of Muscat will be a huge relief for the Rangers board, which has been on the hunt for a replacement since they sacked Russell Martin before the international break.

They discussed the matter with Steven Gerrard and Danny Rohl, but both withdrew from contention before the Ibrox board made a final decision.

The Rangers hierarchy wanted an experienced leader that would unite their support and feel they have found that in Muscat.

The former Australian international has won leagues in his homeland, Japan and China.

He also spent a season at Rangers as a player, under Alex McLeish, in 2002-03.

Muscat was previously considered for the Rangers managerial role before Philippe Clement was chosen.

Rangers’ under-19 coach, Steven Smith, has been appointed to lead the team in their upcoming Premiership match against Dundee United.

While Muscat spoke on Thursday to confirm that his focus is on his current side. He said: “It’s challenging to compare the performances of different teams in the standings against us, but what I can say is that our own performance is the most crucial aspect.

“We will demonstrate responsibility and reliability. This has been my emphasis since joining the team.

“Our own performance is paramount. It should be noted that no game is easy. We have to ensure we perform well and play as we should. This will be our primary focus tomorrow and we will do our utmost to deliver.”
