Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty has called for David Lammy “to be moved on” as the Foreign Secretary has “jeopardised” the UK’s relationship with the US.
The Tory MP for Huntingdon has urged David Lammy to apologise – and for the Prime Minister to reshuffle ministerial positions – after social media posts resurfaced showing derogatory comments he made towards Donald Trump, particularly relevant after his historic victory over Kamala Harris yesterday.
“I would be surprised if he is not moved on to avoid further embarrassment with our relationship with the US,” says Mr Obese-Jecty.
He added: “We now have a president of the United States that will not forget these comments have been made.”
In 2017, David Lammy posted on X: “If Trump comes to the UK, I will be out protesting in the streets. He is a racist KKK and Nazi sympathiser.”
When Mr Trump announced his UK visit was put on hold in 2017, the now Foreign Secretary tweeted: “How about never Donald? Never is good for me.”
Following this in 2019, the Foreign Secretary once again attacks the Republican online: “Deluded, dishonest, xenophobic, narcissistic, Donald Trump is no friend of Britain. He is not fit to hold public office.”
David Lammy or Keir Starmer are yet to apologise for the previous comments made.
The Conservative MP says “he has to come out and apologise”.
He said: “He has been completely unapologetic and shown no remorse so we can only assume they are the views he still holds.”
Mr Obese-Jecty adds how the Foreign Secretary has “jeopardised our future relationship for a few likes on Twitter”.
The prime minister came under pressure over the comments at Prime Minister’s Questions in the Commons from the new Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, dodging the chance to apologise on his behalf.
Donald Trump will make a historic return to the White House after winning the 2024 US election, defeating Kamala Harris.
Despite his older social media posts, David Lammy shared on X yesterday a contradictory statement in a desperate bid to repair his relationship with the US.
He said: “The UK has no greater friend than the US, with the special relationship being cherished on both sides of the Atlantic for more than 80 years. We look forward to working with you and @JDVance in the years ahead.”
