The UK must scrap its “failed” high tax, high spend approach to government and adopt a more Trumpian method, the US Speaker of the House of Representatives has said.

Mike Johnson has warned Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer that if he fails to streamline the role of the state, Britain will fall into decline.

He told the Telegraph that the “foundational principles” of Western prosperity “have been under challenge” recently.

His comments came before attending a meeting of the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC), which is committed to reversing Western decline, next week. ARC was set up by clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson in 2023.

Mr Johnson told the outlet: “The Alliance for Responsible Citizenship is gathering at a critical time.

“As the foundational principles that have defined the West and generated unprecedented liberty and prosperity have been under challenge, we must commit ourselves again to their defence.

“With a new, unified government, America is stepping forward to help lead this charge and to demonstrate that decline is not inevitable.

“We look forward to collaborating with our friends and allies to turn away from the failed vision that has plagued our nations for too long.”

Mr Johnson will make his first official visit to London next week, the first since he took the role of Speaker in October 2023.

The Speaker will join around 4,000 people from 200 countries at the conference. The event will focus on the future of the family, free enterprise and energy challenges.

Sir Paul Marshall, the GB News owner, Mr Peterson and Michael Gove, are all due to speak.
