Katie Boulter suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Jasmine Paolini in the second round of the Madrid Open, losing 6-1 6-2 in under an hour.
The British number one, still finding her feet on clay, was no match for the sixth seed who made it to the French Open final last season.
Boulter’s serve was particularly weak, securing only 11 points throughout the match and not holding serve until the second-to-last game.
Paolini could have secured an even more resounding victory, having held a match point at 5-0 in the second set. However, Boulter managed to rally slightly to avoid a love set.
In other news, men’s ninth seed Daniil Medvedev advanced to the third round after opponent Laslo Djere withdrew, while women’s ninth seed Paula Badosa had to pull out due to a back injury.
