Kamala Harris on Friday signaled she’d support abolishing the Electoral College and packing the Supreme Court – an indication that the former vice president has moved further to the left since her disastrous 2024 presidential campaign.

“I know this is going to be controversial coming from me, in particular,” Harris said in remarks at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville, Tenn., before laying out part of her potential 2028 platform.

“We need to revisit the Electoral College. We need to revisit the point of expanding the court, to 13 justices like we have 13 district courts. We need to revisit, if they so want, statehood for Puerto Rico and D.C.,” the former vice president argued.

Harris did not rule out a 2028 White House run.

Abolishing the Electoral College – a plank on the Democratic Socialists of America platform – is not a position Harris held during her failed 2024 presidential campaign. Harris lost both the Electoral College and popular vote to President Trump that year.

Similarly, Harris didn’t back court packing in 2024. The former vice president instead favored term limits and subjecting justices to a binding code of ethics.

Harris supported statehood for Washington, DC, during her campaign against Trump, but not for Puerto Rico.

In her remarks, the former vice president also called for “accountability and consequences” for federal judicial nominees that intentionally mislead the Senate Judiciary Committee, including putting in place rules that would allow the panel to hold nominees who lie in contempt of Congress.

Harris’ leftward tilt comes amid reports she’s been talking to prominent progressives, including socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, ahead of another possible run at the White House.

Harris reached out to Mamdani in June to discuss the future of the Democratic Party and set up a longer conversation, according to Axios.

In April, the former vice president met with DSA darling Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in Chicago, the outlet reported.

Harris is currently the front-runner for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.

She leads California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Ocasio-Cortez by double-digits, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average of early polls.

In her remarks in Nashville, Harris did not rule out another White House run, telling conference attendees that she has “not made a decision.”

“I am fully, sincerely, focused on these midterms,” she said.
