A struggling Mets offense that managed just two runs across a three-game sweep in Miami needed to operate without Juan Soto again Monday.
Soto, who was scratched Sunday while dealing with a fever and weakness with a flu-like bug that’s been going around the team, was absent from the lineup Memorial Day as the Mets opened a three-game home series against the Reds.
Carson Benge served as designated hitter, while the Mets went with an outfield of Nick Morabito in left, A.J. Ewing in center and Tyrone Taylor in right.
Soto was initially slated to play in the series finale at loanDepot Park, but ended up getting scratched and was unavailable — removing one of the Mets’ few consistent bats from their lineup before the Marlins completed the sweep with a 4-0 walk-off win in the ninth inning.
It’d been a “kind of like a 24-hour thing” with others who’d caught it, but the Mets, Carlos Mendoza said Sunday, would have to see.

Over his last 10 games, Soto hit six homers, drove in 10 runs and produced a 1.342 OPS.
That stretch has lifted those numbers to 10, 21 and .949, respectively, to start the second season of his $765 million deal.
