Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman said the U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team shouldn’t have laughed along with President Donald Trump after he made a joke about having to invite the women’s team to Tuesday’s State of the Union address.
Both teams won gold over Canada at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.
While back in the Bruins’ locker room Wednesday, Swayman was asked by a reporter about the “negative reaction” to the viral call between the men’s team and Trump — where Trump said he’d have to invite the women’s team to his State of the Union address or else “I’d probably be impeached”
“We should’ve reacted differently,” Swayman said of Trump’s comment about the women’s team.
“We know that we are so excited for the women’s team. We have so much respect for the women’s team. To share that gold medal with them is something we’re forever grateful for.”
The U.S. men’s team attended Trump’s SOTU address at the U.S. Captiol Tuesday, and they visited the White House.
“It was an incredible honor,” Swayman said of the team’s visit to Washington D.C.
“We all were there to represent our country [and] celebrate a gold medal for the United States and that was something that we really embodied and we’re really grateful to be a part of.”
During Tuesday’s SOTU, Trump said the women’s hockey team will “soon” visit the White House, despite the team declining his invitation for that night due to scheduling conflicts following their gold medal win over Canada at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games.
It’s unknown if the women’s hockey team accepted an invitation to the White House after declining Trump’s original invite.
