Extraordinary images of the Japan Airlines aircraft being swallowed by flames have been released. The craft, according to Japanese media reports, collided with a coast guard jet.
All 379 passengers and crew on board were evacuated, however two occupants of the coast guard flight were killed and its captain is in a critical condition.
“We are currently assessing the extent of the damage,” the airline said, according to an NHK report.
Japan Airlines said the aircraft – Flight 516 – had departed from Shin-Chitose airport in Hokkaido at 4pm local time (7pm GMT) and was scheduled to land at Haneda at 5.40pm.
