James Middleton opens up on 'unbearable sadness' and teases fans on book idea

Princess Kate’s beloved brother, James Middleton, teased his 259,000 Instagram followers as he suggested he may be planning to write a book.

The entrepreneur and dog lover took to the photo-sharing platform to thank his fans for the support given him throughout 2023 and take a look back at what happened over the past 12 years.

Sharing two pictures alongside the message, he wrote: “I’m so grateful to all of you for support this year. I share many of my journeys – ups and downs – with you.

“As it’s been such a reflective year I have been putting pen to paper which has been the most wonderful experience… so maybe a [book] next year???”

The prospect of a book by Mr Middleton was welcomed by some of his followers, with one writing in the comment section: “I’d read any book you write.”

Mr Middleton wouldn’t be the first member of his family to pen a book. His sister Pippa Middleton published two books in recent years – Celebrate, a party hosting guide, and Heartfelt, a recipe book released in collaboration with the British Heart Foundation.

While Princess Kate hasn’t released a book she authored, she wrote the foreword to Hold Still, the photography book resulting from the Hold Still project depicting the pandemic lockdown through the life of everyday Britons.

In his Instagram post, Princess Kate’s younger brother also looked back to the beginning of last year, when he was struck by the death of his beloved dog Ella.

Mr Middleton, who in the past had candidly shared how his trained therapy pet helped him through depression, wrote: “The year started with the unbearable sadness of losing Ella. Despite knowing her time was coming, it has taken me a while to come to terms with her no longer being by my side.”

The future Queen’s brother recalled how 2023 also brought fresh joy to his life, as he and his wife Alizée Thevenet welcomed their first child, Inigo.

He wrote: “Later in the year, my wife Alizee and I had the absolute delight of welcoming our first child Inigo into the world.

“Inigo has already found his place amongst the pack, giggling every time one of the dogs comes over to nestle up beside us.”

Mr Middleton also mentioned his entrepreneurial success, as he recalled how his James & Ella dog food brand was added to the shelves in Waitrose.

He added: “It was a very proud moment taking Inigo to our local store to see the product on the shelves for the first time.”

Looking ahead and wishing a happy new year to his followers, the entrepreneur and royal brother added: “I’m going into 2024 and promise to continue to focus on my mission… To make all dogs lives as happy and healthy as they have made mine.”
