The iconic chef said: “Homemade lasagne is right up there with the best comfort food.”

Serving up to six people, James Martin’s lasagne is “perfect for sharing” and if enough is left over, it’s a great lunch option for the next day.

“Perfect your lasagne game with this masterclass recipe,” the chef noted, which is ready to eat within 52 minutes.

Ingredients contain at least three of your five-a-day meaning that it’s healthy as well as delicious.

Then there’s James Martin’s cheese sauce which elevates the whole dish from basic to extraordinary.

James Martin’s homemade lasagne recipe

Ingredients:

500g beef mince
One onion peeled and diced
Three cloves garlic, minced
400g can chopped tomatoes
Two tbs tomato puree
Few sprigs thyme
200ml beef stock
100ml Red white wine

Cheese sauce:

50g butter
50g plain flour
300ml milk
300ml double cream
12 lasagne sheets
200g grated cheddar cheese
Two balls mozzarella

Method

Make the filling

Preheat the oven to 200c. To make the filling, fry the beef, onion, garlic and thyme until browned. Top with stock, wine and tomatoes and gently bubble for 30 minutes.

To make the white sauce

Melt the butter in a pan, whisk in the flour and cook out for two minutes. Add the milk cream and half of the grated cheese and whisk, then simmer until bubbling.

Place a third of all the meat into the bottom of a large oven-proof dish. Top with lasagne sheet and repeat twice more.

Finish by pouring sauce all over the top. Add the rest of the cheese and mozzarella and bake for 20 minutes.

Then there you have it – a lovely homemade lasagne and cheesy sauce that is moreish.

People may like to eat the lasagne dish on its own, but it’s totally acceptable to serve the lasagne alongside a salad dish.

Cooks Alex and Sonja Overhiser recommended Italian chopped salad to serve with lasagne.

One Romaine heart
Five cups leafy lettuce
One large shallot
One English cucumber
Cherry tomatoes
Green olives, halved
Jarred sliced pepperoncini
Parmesan shavings
Red pepper flakes, optional

Chop the ingredients and mix together in the Italian dressing sauce for the ideal pairing with lasagne.
