I've been to hundreds of concerts – here's the 5 best including 1 at Glastonbury

As with all art, music is subjective. We all have our favourite artists who we listen to on repeat. But when it comes to live performances, it is a slightly different kettle of fish. Not all artists are amazing performers and some are simply more suited to playing through some headphones or a speaker. But other bands and singers are born to be on stage – and these five performances were the peak of my gig-going life so far.

Here are my top five favourite live performances that I’ve seen.

5. Kings of Leon at Bellahouston Park 2013

This was one of my earlier attendances at a concert but it has stayed with me since. Kings of Leon were one of my favourites growing up so it was a hugely exciting moment for my 16-year-old self. They played a mini day festival and were not shy to perform all of their big-hitters like Use Somebody and Pyro. The sound was exactly as it would be when listening on CD or streaming.

4. Little Simz at Glastonbury 2024

I watched Little Simz’ set at Glastonbury last year and it was a special moment. I was blown away by her lyricism and stage presence and could tell that feeling was being felt throughout the crowd. She played my personal favourites Woman and Mood Swings and was the stand out of the weekend for me.

3. Florence and the Machine at T in the Park 2012

This was my first time attending the now-cancelled festival and I remember feeling euphoric during her set. Cosmic Love, You Got the Love and Dog Days are Over were blasted through the Scottish fields on the first day of the festival and the atmosphere was so magical. I’d recommend going to see Florence and the Machine at least once if you can.

2. Arctic Monkeys at the SECC 2011

This was my first ever gig and that is likely one of the reasons it lives so high up on this list. I had never experienced anything like it before and they were my most listened to artist through my teenage years so it did feel very poignant at the time. The band started the set with a new song from their AM album and continued to play all of my favourites – I wish I could relive this one.

1. Charli XCX at O2 Academy Glasgow 2022

This is hands down the best concert I’ve ever been to. Charli XCX was touring her Crash album, the one prior to Brat, which has since changed her career trajectory. The venue was not too big and the crowd were warm and welcoming, it felt like a community and that just added to the energy that Charli was bringing from the moment she stepped on stage with her two incredible dancers.
