I’ve been to 12 countries this year – 1 island to avoid | Travel News | Travel

This year has been a whirlwind of adventures for me. I’ve been incredibly lucky to explore new cities, taste local foods, and meet people whose stories have stayed with me long after the trip ended. From trying Italian foods in Sardinia to exploring Poland, I’ve added 12 new countries to my list in 2025.

Each country has offered something special, but not every destination leaves you wanting more. Among all the places I’ve visited, there’s one country I wouldn’t rush back to. That’s not because it wasn’t beautiful, but because sometimes travel teaches you what you do and don’t want from a trip.

One of my stops this year was Mauritius, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean that many people describe as true paradise.

It was exactly that, turquoise waters, palm tree-lined beaches and sunsets that look out of a movie. It’s the kind of place that many people dream of visiting, but for me, it just didn’t live up to the hype.

For starters, it’s a very, very long way from the UK. It’s around 12 hours of flying, not including the connections and airport hours that make the journey feel even longer.

By the time I finally landed, I was expecting something truly unforgettable, but I found myself wondering whether the distance was really worth it.

The island itself is undeniably beautiful, but after a few days, I felt like I had seen most of what there was to see. Aside from the beaches and a few nature spots, there isn’t a lot to do.

Now, I know people don’t often travel to Mauritius to explore, and it’s more of a relaxing destination, but that’s when I discovered that I’m much more of an explorer when it comes to travelling.

I can absolutely see why Mauritius appeals to honeymooners or anyone wanting a quiet escape. It’s peaceful, and the people are warm and welcoming.

However, for me, it lacked that spark that makes me fall in love with a place. It’s one of those destinations I’m glad I’ve experienced once, but I don’t feel the need to go back.

In contrast, out of the other 11 countries I’ve visited this year, some have me itching to return. From the late-night street food of South Korea, the laid-back charm of Belgium, every stop has left its mark.

Even closer to home, Jersey surprised me with its mix of British comfort and peaceful island living, while Croatia impressed me with its old towns.

Mauritius might not have been the perfect destination for me, but even that experience had its place in my year of travels.
