Israeli military kills high-priority senior Hamas commander in hammer blow to group

The Israeli military has reported the killing of Adil Mismah, identified as a regional commander of Hamas’s elite Nukhba forces.

Mismah allegedly led Hamas terrorists into the ravaged Kibbutz Kissufim and directed attacks on other devastated communities, including the kibbutzim of Nirim and Be’eri. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Mismah also played a pivotal role in the October 7 attacks, leading Hamas gunmen in confrontations with Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.

His involvement in directing operations against Israeli targets marked him as a high-priority target for the IDF.

The IDF further detailed that the Nukhba commander met his fate in an Israeli Air Force airstrike, a precision operation directed by Israeli ground troops.

The strike was part of broader operations in northern Gaza’s Shejaia, where Israeli forces targeted multiple terrorist sites, including a “compound for conducting warfare” utilized by both Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

In the same coordinated operation, IDF troops conducted a raid on a command and control center near a mosque, successfully locating and seizing significant quantities of weapons employed by these terrorist organizations. The Israeli Navy also played an active role in the Gaza Strip on the same day, launching strikes on terror targets across the region.

In response to escalating tensions, Israel is reportedly withdrawing some troops from Gaza, shifting its focus to more targeted operations against Hamas. An Israeli official revealed that the withdrawal primarily involves reservists, a force of 300,000 mobilized for the conflict, and aims to “re-energize the Israeli economy.”

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has also seen a concerning surge in settler violence, with Israeli settlers responsible for at least 10 Palestinian deaths and the torching of numerous homes in the occupied West Bank in 2023. Yesh Din, an Israeli human rights group, dubbed this year the “most violent” on record for settler attacks, with a notable increase following the October 7 attacks by Hamas.

On the humanitarian front, the Palestine Red Crescent Society and the Egyptian Red Crescent have collaboratively established the first organized camp in Khan Younis to shelter Palestinians displaced by Israeli strikes in Gaza. Initially accommodating 300 families, the camp’s capacity is set to expand to 1,000 tents.

In terms of territorial developments, Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, announced that some evacuated Israeli communities north of the Gaza Strip may soon return as military operations progress. This comes as a response to the aftermath of the October 7 attack by Hamas.
