Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar to resign before country's next election


Leo Varadkar is to announce he’s resigning as Ireland’s Prime Minister ahead of the next general election.

He’s served as Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) on two separate occasions – once between 2017 and 2020 – taking over from Enda Kenny.

He will also step down as party leader. Varadkar became Ireland’s youngest taoiseach in 2017 when he became leader of Fine Gael.
