Bacchanalia, a Greek and Mediterranean restaurant in London’s Mayfair, is often hailed for having one of the city’s most stunning lavatories. The eatery, owned by billionaire Richard Caring, is adorned with lavish decor including marble statues and gold accents.
It houses an array of Roman and Greek artworks, some dating back 2,000 years, purchased from esteemed auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s. Notably, it also showcases sculptures by globally acclaimed artist Damien Hirst, such as a winged lion and a unicorn ridden by two winged lovers.
The extravagant furnishings reportedly cost a staggering £70million. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the restaurant boasts an equally opulent bathroom. And in honour of World Toilet Day (November 19), we take a closer look.
TikTok account @loos_of_london paid a hefty £200 to review them. They concluded: “No expense has been spared. There are statues everywhere – but the loos have been created by the gods”.
Describing the venue’s extravagant facilities, a visitor enthused: “The loos themselves have mirrored […] doors in gold. Sublime. Inside you’ll find an ornate light A green toilet, a loo brush, a sanitary bin and of course a coat hook. Star-embossed loo roll. Mosaic leaf walls. The sink area was giving [Harry Potter and the] Chamber of Secrets vibes. Antique gold taps and a very luxurious hand wash from a dispenser. There was also a matching hand lotion. Thick, disposable hand towels and a full length mirror. While this place is very expensive, the loos are extraordinary.”
Echoing the sentiment, TikTok user Lyla Shaikh was equally impressed during her visit, declaring she had “never seen a bathroom this boujee. ” She further remarked: “This might be the most stunning bathroom in London”.
Similarly awestruck, TikTok sensation Bbybeets called the restaurant’s decor as “breathtaking”, admitting her “jaw was on the floor” upon entry.
Over 400,000 tiles are believed to have been used to create the women’s bathrooms, to create a orchard greenery, inspired by the Garden of Hesperides, where according to Greek mythology, golden apples grew. Meanwhile, in the men’s toilets you’ll see high-gloss black toilets – which are supposed to represent Hades’ underworld.
The bathroom entrance is a thick wooden door that looks heavy as it opens. Inside is huge, with plush stools and more statues surrounding a central hand washing area made out of a huge chunk of marble. There are mirrors in every corner, and the wall is beautifully decorated with mosaic tiles. There’s even a central column of mirrors that are covered in gold.
