The Cotswolds have long offered a getaway route for those fed up with the hustle and bustle of city life. A world away from the frenetic pace of London, the area offers a serene and picturesque living environment, complete with stunning landscapes and a more leisurely rhythm of life.
Unsurprisingly, it’s become a bit of a haven for celebrities who have sought refuge in what is an idyllic corner of the English countryside. The likes of Ellen DeGeneres and former PM Boris Johnson have used it to escaped the glare of their fame. David and Victoria Beckham even upped sticks to move to the Costwolds – and their choice of village is truly unique.
The Beckhams acquired their converted farmhouse in the charming yet diminutive village of Great Tew in 2016, reportedly shelling out £6.15 million for the privilege. Despite its modest size, there’s much more to this quaint Cotswolds hamlet than initially meets the eye.
Located in Oxfordshire, just five miles northeast of the bustling market town of Chipping Norton, this small village is home to the famous couple and their four children, while the total population of the village barely exceeds 200 residents.
Situated in the heart of the Cotswolds, it boasts a history dating back to the Bronze Age, and it has a rich heritage of mills.
Since the 1960s, the Johnston family has owned the village as part of the Great Tew estate, reports MyLondon.
The Falkland Arms pub, a fixture in the village since the 17th century, serves as the social hub of the community, offering accommodation, food, and traditional ale.
It provides the ideal example of village life, and the Beckhams seem to agree having shelled out for their rural home.
The property boasts a large swimming pool, expansive countryside views, and even a football pitch where David can pass on his sporting expertise to his four children.
The family frequently posts envy-inducing photos of their home on Instagram, showcasing their opulent lifestyle. They took full advantage of the tranquil Cotswolds location during the first Covid lockdown, retreating to their farmhouse which offered ample open space away from the hustle and bustle of central London.
Images from inside the Beckhams’ residence reveal the couple’s tastes. The insights handed to fans by the Beckhams showcase a quintessentially British interior design, complete with an orderly pantry, a grand rustic wooden dining table, and a stunning fireplace.
It’s clear they’ve drawn inspiration from their surroundings, as the small village of Great Tew is renowned for its charming country living. Despite the isolation of the tiny Cotswolds village, David sought council permission in 2020 to construct an escape tunnel.
However, it’s not to simply get away from the area – it followed an attack on fellow footballer Dele Alli at his home. In June, the council approved plans for the underground tunnel, along with a wine cellar and a garage extension.
With David’s estimated net worth of £350 million, coupled with Victoria’s earnings from her Spice Girls days, it’s no surprise that the family have secured such a stunning property in the heart of the Cotswolds. The couple also own properties in Miami and Dubai, but they’ve seem to be very found of this quaint village’s special charm.
