The pair paid £150 via Groupon for a room but were upgraded to a £400-a-night suite by the manager on the night, she said.
The teaching assistant said: “We stayed there for a special occasion. It’s not something we could usually afford, so it does anger me that people are getting this level of luxury for free and every day.
“It’s just really disheartening. We have people in the UK who are desperately struggling to pay for food, gas and electricity.
“These people, including veterans and older people, are going cold and hungry through the winter while people who haven’t worked and paid to be here are being housed in such luxury, with a cozy roof over their heads and food on the table.
The mum-of-two lived in the Canary Wharf area for 25 years and worked there for 15, added: “I’m absolutely against racism, and I support people being able to move to another country, but I do feel they should be able to offer needed skilled work.
“I work hard for not a great wage. When you hear about things like this it is very upsetting.
“It will cost a fortune either to adapt this hotel and take out all the luxuries, and or to pay for them to stay there.
“It’s not like this is a Travelodge or a disused holiday park.”
Tower Hamlets Council said: “We are aware of the Government’s decision to use the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf to provide temporary accommodation for asylum seekers.
“It is important that the Government ensures that there is a full package of support for those staying at the hotel. We are working with the Home Office and partners to make sure that all necessary safety and safeguarding arrangements are in place.”
