Inside Rob Brydon’s quiet life off-screen in suburb where homes fetch £1million

Rob Brydon, a renowned Welsh actor, comedian, singer and writer, first gained prominence through his roles in the dark comedy series Human Remains and the mockumentary Marion and Geoff. The 60-year-old has graced numerous series over the years, including the comedic Supernova, The Keith Barret Show and 24 Hour Party People. However, Brydon is perhaps best recognised for his portrayal of Uncle Bryn in the BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey, a role that earned him a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Comedy Performance.

He’s also shared screen time with fellow comedian and actor Steve Coogan in several TV series, such as The Trip, The Trip to Italy, The Trip to Spain and The Trip to Greece. In his latest role, Brydon hosts the BBC reality adventure series Destination X, which sees 13 contestants embark on the road trip of a lifetime across Europe—except they don’t know where they are.

On board the X bus, which has blacked out windows, games master Brydon asks them one simple question: where are they? The players must try to figure out where in the world they are because at the end of each episode, they have to place an X on a map. At the end of the competition, one person walks away with £100,000.

Before his rise to stardom, Brydon spent his childhood in the village of Baglan near Port Talbot, Wales, alongside his parents and younger brother, reports the Express.

The village is nestled on a hillside near Baglan Bay, the moors and Cwmafan.

During his school years, he crossed paths with stand-up comedian Suzy Eddie Izzard, comedian and writer Ruth Jones, and actress Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Off-screen, Brydon reportedly resides in Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, Richmond upon Thames, with his wife, Clare Holland and their two sons.

In a previous article in The Telegraph from 2010, Brydon said of the area: “I live in Strawberry Hill, a desolate, barren no-man’s-land between Twickenham and Teddington in Middlesex.”

Rob has five children in total: three from his previous marriage to Martina Fitchie and two with his wife, Clare. In a recent interview, he told The Times that there is quite an age gap between his children. He said, “I have quite the age range, 30 down to 14. I’m desperate for a lie-in.”

He added: “They all do different things. My eldest is in casting, then chef, teacher, still at school, still at school.”

Strawberry Hill, an affluent suburb in Twickenham just 10 miles from Charing Cross, is famed for its 18th-century Gothic villa, Strawberry Hill House, designed by author Horace Walpole between 1749 and 1776.

The property is situated on a substantial 46-acre plot and is encircled by stunning Grade II-listed gardens, which are registered on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

Strawberry Hill offers a family-friendly environment that feels more akin to a countryside village than a London suburb. With streets lined with trees and views of the River Thames, this suburb has a verdant atmosphere yet maintains convenient connections to London Waterloo.

During the summer, visitors can relish a picnic on Twickenham Green or savour a brisk autumn walk complemented by a hot coffee from one of the nearby cafes. Additionally, vistas of Eel Pie Island can be appreciated from The Embankment in Twickenham.

House prices in Strawberry Hill have an overall average of £1,030,580 over the last year, according to Rightmove.

The majority of properties sold in Strawberry Hill during the last year were flats, selling for an average price of £544,290. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £1,493,925, with terraced properties fetching £979,844.

Overall, the historical sold prices in Strawberry Hill over the last year were 18% up on the previous year and 4% down on the 2022 peak of £1,075,739.
