Inside Anmer Hall – the £31m mansion where Princess Kate is continuing her recovery

Princess Kate is recovering at Anmer Hall following her procedure last month, with the 19th-century mansion having been passed down to numerous royal owners.

The Princess of Wales had been recovering at their Berkshire home but is now heading to their Sandringham estate with her children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – for a half-term break in Norfolk.

A Kensington Palace spokesman revealed on January 17 that “based on the current medical advice” it was unlikely that the Princess, 42, would return to royal duties until after Easter.

Prince William stepped back from royal duties briefly while Kate was recovering from her operation to help look after her and their three children who all attend Lambrook school – just a short 15-minute drive from the Windsor Estate.

Anmer Hall is a Georgian country house that dates back to the 19th-century. It was aquired by the Sandringham Estate sometime after Queen Victoria purchased the property.

It has been leased to numerous people, including business owners, civil servants, and members of the Royal Family.

It is now the country residence of the Prince and Princess of Wales after the late Queen Elizabeth II gifted the mansion to the couple as a wedding present.

Built in 1802, it has undergone numerous renovations over the years. Kate and William’s most recent renovation in 2021 cost a reported £1.5million.

The 10-bedroom estate has two storeys and a former attic with dormer windows. The long south front comprises 13 bays, and was refaced with red bricks.

It has 13 ground-floor windows set in blank arches and a semicircular porch on two Tuscan columns, with 11 windows on the first floor.

The house was registered as a Grade II listed building in 1984, but was later de-listed.

The mansion even has an outdoor swimming pool and tennis court – perfect for Kate and William who have discussed their love of sport.

The interior style has been described to be “a mixture of contemporary designs and well-loved antiques”, decorated with gilt picture frames and houseplants.

The walls have been reported to be painted in cream colours, while the dining room is a “bold jewel green”.

The interior was designed by Ben Pentreath, who was also responsible for the design of several houses belonging to Prince Charles’s Duchy of Cornwall.

It’s rare to get a glimpse inside the home, with the Prince and Princess of Wales keeping their home private. Occasional photos of Princess Charlotte or Prince George have revealed elegantly neutral interiors with colourful cushions and subtle pattern in the background.
