This WWI film has been described as ‘incredible’ by fans, and it is available to watch on Netflix. They Shall Not Grow Old is a 2018 film, directed and produced by Peter Jackson.

TimeOut has listed it as the best World War I movie of all time. They Shall Not Grow Old is widely known as a powerful and innovative cinematic experience.

The film’s synopsis, as per IMDb reads: “Using state-of-the-art technology and materials from the BBC and Imperial War Museum, filmmaker Peter Jackson allows the story of World War I to be told by the men who were there. Life on the front is explored through the voices of the soldiers, who discuss their feelings about the conflict, the food they ate, the friends they made and their dreams of the future.”

The documentary film was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary at the 72nd British Academy Film Awards.

Some of its cast includes: Thomas Adlam, William Argent, John Ashby and Walter Aust.

TimeOut said: “It’s an incredible film in the way it brings the archives to life and it’s so powerful for featuring the recordings of the veterans. It shocked me to the core to hear the voices of men who’d been dead for 30 years that I’d once interviewed. Anyone with even a passing interest in the war should see it.”

Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian awared it five stars and said: “The soldiers are returned to an eerie, hyperreal kind of life in front of our eyes, like ghosts or figures summoned up in a seance. The faces are unforgettable. As an act of popular history, They Shall Not Grow Old is outstanding.”

One fan review on IMDb said: “This incredible film brings us as close to experiencing it as we are ever going to get.”

With another adding: “This should become compulsory viewing for every one.”

The film is available to stream on Netflix.
