Incredible moment £3.5b UK ship leads huge show of NATO military might

HMS Prince of Wales took the lead during a fifteen-ship international fleet for a joint exercise.

The UK-led Carrier Strike Group (CSG )amalgamated with the NATO Amphibious Task Group (ATG) and additional Norwegian naval units for the incredible scenes on Wednesday, March 13.

The ships sailing in formation included USS Paul Ignatius and HMS Portland. Aircraft participating in the flypast were six Finnish F-18 and two Swedish JAS-39.

The units are at sea for Exercise Nordic Response 24, a multi-domain exercise taking place in the northern Nordic region until Friday.

The UK Ministry of Defence say: “The CSG has been exercising F-35B strikes to simulate defence of allied territory, whilst simultaneously defending itself.”

They added: “The ATG has been exercising landing amphibious units ashore to retake allied territory.”

Exercise Nordic Response 24 is part of Exercise Steadfast Defender 24, the largest NATO exercise in decades.

According to the Royal Navy, the HMS Prince of Wales is “one of the most powerful surface warships ever constructed in the UK”.

“HMS Prince of Wales forms part of the Royal Navy‘s two-strong fleet of Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers.

“We see these ships as maritime platforms, adaptable and powerful, ready to deliver carrier strike missions, enforce no-fly zones, deploy Royal Marine Commandos, deliver humanitarian aid, and build international partnerships.”
