'I'm a movie expert and watched 10,000 films – but last one I saw was terrible'

A movie expert has given his harsh verdict on a film he dubbed a “real stinker”. Movie whizz Simon Sweetman was left more than disappointed with the film he chose to be his 10,000th watch.

Hitting the screens in 2024, sci-fi film Madame Webb has all the makings of a crowdpleaser, thanks to its star studded cast. A-listers Dakota Johnson, Emma Roberts and Sydney Sweeney all appear in the fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The suspense thriller follows a Manhattan paramedic that may have clairvoyant abilities, and she then forms a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures. However, this film failed to impress critics, scoring just 10% in Rotten Tomatoes and was dubbed a box-office flop.

At the box-office, it grossed just £32.6 million ($43.8 million) in the United States and Canada, and £42.3 million ($56.7 million) in other territories, making a worldwide total of just £74 million ($100.5 million).

It even received three Golden Raspberry Awards: Worst Picture, Worst Actress (for Dakota), and Worst Screenplay.

Calling the film “very bad”, movie lover Simon didn’t hold back in his scathing review.

He said: “I have just logged my 10,000th film on Letterboxd— I chose a real stinker in the end.

“I sat through Madame Web, probably because I was recently talking about Dakota Johnson, and I’ve since seen even more memes featuring her funny interview snippets. So I wanted to see just how bad this infamous turkey of a recent film was.”

Simon went on to add that the superhero film was an “atrocity”.

It appears he is not alone in his thoughts as hundreds of dissapointed filmwatchers have taken to Rotten Tomatoes to express their frustration.

One wrote: “Let’s start with the good news – the movie ends. Yes, what you’ve heard is sadly true. This movie is bad. Truly awful. Among the worst superhero films… ever.”

“It’s so poorly, laughably designed and implemented that it’s as if it were a student film, and not some colossally-budgeted Hollywood epic”, added a second.

A third wrote: “Madame Web is not fun and not entertaining. Most of all, it’s disappointing, because it teases you with possibilities that never come to bear.”
