'I'm a motoring expert – you need to avoid this costly windscreen de-icing method'

In the cold winter mornings it can be frustrating to jump in your freezing cold car to set off for work, only to discover your windscreen is covered in ice.

Thankfully, there are a number of options available to clear your windshield – the more traditional methods of scrapers and de-icers, or alternative social media hacks such as preemptively rubbing onions and potatoes on the glass.

However, the motoring experts at Swansway Motor Group have urged drivers to avoid using a common windscreen hack, which could lead to a potentially hefty fine.

Engine idling is the act of unnecessarily leaving your vehicle’s engine running whilst it is stationary.

It is a practice that is illegal under Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, and the experts at Swansway have warned you could be made to pay for doing it to melt the ice on your windscreen.

“If you leave your engine running while defrosting your windscreen on a street, you could face a £20 fixed penalty notice,” they said.

Moreover, if that fine isn’t settled promptly, then the cost can be escalated to £40.

“We encourage our customers to be mindful of these regulations and consider alternative defrosting methods that don’t involve leaving the engine idling.”

The motoring experts at Swansway Motor Group emphasised the potential seriousness of driving with a windscreen that hasn’t been sufficiently cleared of snow or ice.

“We strongly advise our customers to take the necessary time to clear their windscreens thoroughly to avoid these penalties and ensure safe driving conditions.”

It is crucial to properly defrost your windscreen in the morning as it ensures full visibility for the driver.

“Driving with a partially defrosted windscreen can significantly impair your ability to see pedestrians, other vehicles, and road signs, leading to potentially dangerous situations.

“A clear windscreen is essential for accurately judging distances and spotting hazards on the road too. Icy or foggy windows can distort perception, increasing the risk of accidents. By thoroughly defrosting your windscreen, you’re actively contributing to safer roads for everyone,” the motoring experts added.

If you are unfortunately involved in an accident, having an inadequately defrosted windscreen can affect your insurance claim as it may be viewed as negligent behaviour – complicating your claim.

“A well-defrosted windscreen not only enhances safety but also driver comfort and confidence. When you can see your surroundings clearly, you’re more relaxed, more focused, and better able to enjoy your driving experience.

“At Swansway, we believe that a good start to your journey contributes to a better overall driving experience.”
