‘I’m a mechanic – this vital part keeps breaking on electric cars’ – claims

A top mechanic claimed one vital car part breaks more than others on electric vehicles in a major revelation.

Craig, a mechanic at Walsall Wood Tyre and Service, claimed that one particular brake problem regularly creeps into electric car services.

He warned brake binding had become a particular issue mechanics were spotting more often.

This is where a vehicle’s brake pads are not releasing properly and instead fusing onto the side of the discs.

This could have an impact on braking distance and control in a major safety concern for road users.

Speaking on the garage’s TikTok channel, Craig explained: “One of the most common service items I have to do on EVs or certainly something I get called out to quite a lot is binding brakes. Simply because the breaks don’t do a lot of work on EVs due to the energy recovery system.

“So every two or three years or so it’s worth taking the brake pads out, clean them all up, fresh bit of brake grease, bang them back together and away you go.

“So yes, servicing an EV is still just as important as servicing a combustion engine. There’s simply less parts to replace when you do.”

Craig made the revelation as he was asked how often electric vehicles should be serviced compared to petrol and diesel models.

According to the RAC, most EVs need servicing “much less frequently” than traditional combustion engine models.

Craig supported this, suggesting that models would not need as much work compared to older vehicles.

However, he made it clear that there was enough under the hood to warrant regular checks to keep the car in good condition.

He added: “A lot of people are thinking I’ve got an EV I don’t need to get it serviced and rightfully so the engine itself doesn’t need as much of a service as your standard combustion engines.

“However, EVs still operate a coolant system which runs on anti-freeze so there is still a strength there to check.

“They still have brake fluid in there which absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and could still become contaminated and needs to be checked, and tyres and brakes as well.”
