A hospice nurse has revealed some of the most common words spoken by people who are dying.
End of life care doctors have shared some insight into what goes through people’s minds in their last moments.
They say some patients have died peacefully saying they had no regrets, while others have expressed sadness for taking their lives for granted, reports Daily Mail.
Hospice nurse Julie McFadden told DailyMail.com that people have called out for their parents who passed away long before or even a former lover they had not seen in years.
She has also heard the patients peacefully tell those around them “I love you.”
McFadden said: ”It’s not usually at their last breath. A lot of people think it’s like the movies — a dramatic, last proclamation of something they’ve always regretted or something they always wanted everyone to know. It’s not really like that.”
She also noted that “Thank you”, “I forgive you”, “Please forgive me” and “Good-bye” are also commonly said.
McFadden, a registered nurse from Los Angeles, California, has worked in hospice care for more than seven years and has been a nurse for more than 15 years – she now shares her knowledge on TikTok.
Another insight she shared is that dying people often talk about how they did not appreciate their health before becoming ill.
She said women often talk about how they regret worrying about their body or dieting.
Palliative care physician, Dr Mina Chang, from the San Francisco Bay Area, told DailyMail.com the most common thing she hears from patients is: “I have no regrets”.
Another common thing people talk about towards the end of their life is “not expressing themselves to their families or their loved ones”.
She added that some people aren’t speaking their last breath, but if they are, or close to it, sometimes they will say “It’s okay” if there are other people around or “I’m ready”.
There are many interesting records of famous people’s iconic last words which have been remembered for their unique messages.
For example, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories, died at age 71 in his garden. He reportedly turned to his wife and said, “You are wonderful,” then clutched his chest and died.
Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple reportedly said “Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.” in his last moments as told by his sister.
Playwright Oscar Wilde famously said, “My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or the other of us has to go.”
