If you’re keeping an eye on your spending, tinned beans are an excellent option – they’re remarkably versatile, and you can get enough to create an entire week’s worth of family meals for just a few pounds. As with many products, budget-friendly options and premium varieties are both available – and the distinction isn’t always obvious. Some shoppers insist there’s little benefit in purchasing more costly beans as the actual product is identical, while others maintain the pricier alternatives offer superior quality.
Now one culinary expert has revealed which option you ought to choose, reports the Mirror. Kathryn Bruton, who boasts more than 17,000 followers on TikTok, where she regularly shares simple, budget-conscious recipes you can make at home, recently uploaded a clip of herself in the tinned beans aisle of a supermarket.

“Let’s talk about tinned beans – where I spend, and where I save,” she said. “I mostly save, and I think you should too.”
She added: “This whole area has the most amazing value for money. An ingredient that will just give you so many different types of meals.”
Pointing towards the more affordable tinned beans, she explained: “This whole section here, these tinned beans are all absolutely delicious, and they’re all around 45p. If you’re cooking for one, there’s at least two meals in one of these, if not one, if you’re particularly hungry.
“So for all of them, for these, these are mega store cupboard fillers for me. I always, always have them.”
Turning her focus to the premium beans, which are sold in resealable glass jars rather than tins and carry a considerably steeper price of £3.25 each versus between 45p and around £1.35 for the tinned alternative, Kathryn said: “If you are going to spend, and where sometimes I spend cooking for one, is in this area here. These guys, you’ve probably seen them everywhere, they’re obviously a little bit more expensive. They’re really good. The quality is great.
“But what’s also really good about them is them being in the jar. For me, it takes the pressure off me, getting through the whole jar all in one sitting or over the course of two days. So I open the jar and I leave it in the fridge, and I just work away at it during the week when I’m cooking for myself.”
Viewers offered their own suggestions in the comments section below the video. One commented: “Just buy dried beans. Even cheaper and taste the same once hydrated.”
Another posted: “I keep and wash out mayonnaise jars and keep food in them. Dump your beans/raisins/fruit etc etc in them and keep in the press or the fridge. Saves you keeping them in plastic containers.”
One user remarked: “No way in hell am I paying over £3 for a jar of beans, 45p tin will do the job.” While another posted: “They all have three-five ingredients though. They should literally be beans and water. No need for the added chemicals in cheap beans.”
Another user commented: “Most underrated food for health.” A fellow user responded: “I live on tinned pulses, add them to everything.”
