‘I’m a driving expert – these new speed cameras check if drivers are wearing seat belts’

Known as “ultra” speed cameras, the new devices are being installed first in Manchester with plans to use them elsewhere in the UK.

Looking incredibly similar to regular speed cameras, they use infra-red technology to take photos and videos of offending motorists without flashing, meaning motorists will not be alerted that they have been caught breaking a traffic law until they are issued a fine.

The cameras can also monitor multiple lanes and directions of traffic and detect if drivers are breaking a number of motoring offences at once.

Abigayle also noted that the new ultra speed cameras have left motorists divided, with some vandals already cutting them down, after they have already issued thousands of fines.

She added: “It seems people aren’t happy about them, and they’ve already started to cut them down. There’s over 100 that have been rolled out in Manchester, they’re in Devon, they’re in Wales, they’re coming to Scotland, and many more places across the UK.

“These cameras have already caught over 3,200 people with just four cameras in two weeks, and they could be coming to a town or city near you.”

With almost 58,000 views and over 1,800 likes, many have shared their views on the new speed cameras and whether they are a good idea.

One viewer commented: “Everyone needs to drive safe, but these are going too far as an invasion into our lives. Keep the old cameras as they were.”

However, another responded: “They check for mobile use and seat belts. [I’d] rather have these people not driving on [the] roads.”
