I’m a cleaning expert — here’s 7 jobs you need to do before going on holiday

There’s nothing better than walking through the door after a relaxing holiday, unless, of course, you’re greeted by bins that smell like a science experiment or a fridge hosting its own ecosystem.

Whether you’re off for a weekend break or a fortnight in the sun, a few simple cleaning jobs can make all the difference to how your home feels when you return. From sparkling loos to freshly made beds, here are my seven must-do cleaning tasks before you set off, plus one bonus Queen of Clean tip that your drains will thank you for.

Empty all the bins

It may sound obvious, but this is one of the most commonly forgotten tasks. Overflowing bins, especially in the kitchen or bathroom, can quickly turn nasty in a warm, closed-up home. Empty every bin in the house, including bedroom and bathroom ones, and give them a quick rinse or spritz with antibacterial spray to prevent smells and bacteria build-up.

Bleach the loos

A quick glug of bleach around each toilet bowl rim will work wonders while you’re away. Not only does it prevent limescale from forming, but it also stops unpleasant odours from developing. It’s a two-minute job that will keep your loos looking and smelling fresh.

Change the beds

There is nothing more comforting than returning home and sinking into clean, freshly washed sheets. Strip the beds and wash your linens a day or two before you leave, then remake them so you can come home to a bed that feels hotel-fresh.

Tidy and clean the fridge

Use up any perishables and give your fridge a quick once-over. Wipe down shelves, check for any items hiding in the back, and make sure there’s nothing left that could spoil while you’re away. The last thing you want to deal with after a lovely break is a fridge full of mouldy surprises.

Clear out the bread bin

Stale bread goes mouldy fast, and mould spores spread quicker than you think. Before you leave, throw out any half-eaten loaves or open packets and give the bread bin a good clean with warm, soapy water.

Do the washing

You’ll likely return home with a suitcase full of washing, so don’t leave a backlog behind. Empty your laundry baskets and get everything washed and dried before you go, future you will be very grateful when you’re not facing two weeks’ worth of laundry at once.

Final freshen-up

Right before you leave, do a quick final sweep of your home. Open windows for a short burst of fresh air, spritz curtains, cushions, and soft furnishings with your favourite room spray, and, if you’re feeling fancy, pop a reed diffuser near the entrance. A home that smells fresh will instantly help you ease back into reality.

One last Queen of Clean tip

Before you head out, sprinkle a little bicarbonate of soda down the kitchen and bathroom sinks. It’s a simple trick that helps neutralise odours and keeps your drains smelling fresh while you’re away.
