A top motoring expert has revealed how road users can “save fuel” in seconds by pressing a button found in most vehicles in the UK. Adjusting a car’s air conditioning settings may not seem important but could prove crucial in cutting back  petrol and diesel fuel use.

Experts have suggested switching air conditioning based on certain conditions was also vital with different settings better at certain times of the day or year. As well as helping road users save on fuel, adjusting air conditioning tools can help make road users’ life easier behind the wheel. Some of these settings could help clear condensation of the front of the glass windscreen and even stop drivers from sniffing fumes when stuck in traffic.

YouTube channel ‘LearnCar01’ said: “If you run your car air conditioner the wrong way, driving not only consumes fuel but the air conditioner also produces odours.

“First driving in summer, turn on the air conditioner and turn on the internal circulation, so the cooling effect is very good.

“Second, driving in winter, turn off the air conditioner and turn on the external circulation. The windshield is not easy to frost and the car is also fuel efficient.

“Third, when driving in the rain, turn on the air conditioner, turn on the external circulation, adjust the blowing mode to blow on the glass. This way there will be no fogging on the glass.

“Fourth, when stuck in traffic turn on the air conditioner, turn on the internal circulation. In this way the exhaust gas from the outside of the car will never enter the car again.”

Pressing the air recirculation tool draws and cools air from inside the vehicle instead of outside. Cooling air inside the model is less demanding than taking air both sitting inside and outside the model.

By  reducing the work required of the air conditioning unit, less power can be used, meaning the model would take up less energy to run.

In turn, this requires less petrol or diesel to run in a major boost for cash-strapped road users.

However, motorists have urged road users to think twice before turning on their air con over the summer.

They said: “Don’t use your air conditioning unless you really have to as it uses engine power and therefore increases fuel consumption.”
