An Illinois carnival was shut down after a 10-year-old child appeared to have been thrown from a ride in Antioch Sunday, authorities said.
Around 2:40 p.m. local time, the Antioch Police Department and the Antioch Fire Department responded to a report of a child being injured on a carnival ride at the Antioch Chamber of Commerce’s Taste of Antioch carnival, the Village of Antioch Police Department said in a statement on Facebook.
When first responders arrived, they discovered an injured 10-year-old child who “appeared to have been thrown from a carnival ride,” Antioch police said in the statement.
The child was airlifted to an area hospital, according to police in Antioch, which is about 60 miles from Chicago. The injury status of the child was not immediately available Monday morning.

Antioch Mayor Scott Gartner shut down the remainder of the rides at the carnival, police said.
“We are always trying to make sure these are safe, fun family events and our thoughts and prayers go out to the child that fell and his family,” Gartner said, per WGN-TV. “I have two young daughters myself. It hit close to home and we have to make sure something like this never happens again and the child is OK.”
“The closure of the rides will ensure safety for our community and allow officials to review safety of each ride,” Antioch police said.
The Illinois Department of Labor, police department and fire department are investigating the incident.
