Ikea has confirmed that one of its UK stores, which has been serving customers for nearly 10 years, will close. The Swedish furniture chain will be pulling down the shutters on its Order and Collection store in Wellington Circle in Aberdeen.
Order and Collection branches are “much smaller than our usual stores”, Ikea explains on its website. They’re designed to “offer you the same great range and inspiration, with most products available to order and collect”. “There is also a small range of products available to take home today. Or if it’s more convenient, you can have it all delivered to your door,” it adds.
The one in Aberdeen launched back in May 2016, becoming the first of its stores in northern Scotland.
It allowed people in surrounding areas to browse their popular Scandinavian designs without having to travel to Edinburgh or Glasgow.
Ikea has confirmed the store is set to shut for good, but says it is looking at other options in the area.
In a statement to the outlet, the company said: “We can confirm that we’ve taken the decision to close our Order and Collection Point in Aberdeen.
“Our commitment to the city remains and we’re currently exploring new locations in the area.
“Ikea continues to have a strong presence in Scotland, with stores in Edinburgh and Glasgow and a new Plan and Order Point opening in Dundee in the near future.”
The company didn’t elaborate on the reason for the closure, and hasn’t yet announced when it will take place.
There are currently 22 Ikea stores across the UK, as well as a number of pick-up points.
