Ideal temperature to set your thermostat or risk ‘mould outbreak’ in your home

Mould can occur anywhere in the home, but it often presents itself in areas such as bedrooms and the bathroom. This is often where humidity is higher due to showers and breathing while sleeping.

It’s always easier to prevent mould than to get rid of it, which means now is a great time to implement measures to stop the problem. Nic Shacklock, from Online-Bedrooms.co.uk, said: “Having a mould outbreak can be devastating, especially in your wardrobe, where clothes may be ruined beyond repair.

“It’s a common problem to deal with in the winter, as the colder temperatures mixed with the warmth indoors can result in excess moisture in the air.”

It is advised to keep the home at a consistent temperature, if possible, to prevent damp and mould from forming.

To prevent a mould outbreak anywhere in the home, it’s recommended that the property be kept between 17°C and 18°C.

This is because mould easily grows in colder rooms which suffer from high humidity, which can easily spread throughout the home.

As temperatures begin to drop, it’s a good idea to set your thermometer to never go below 17C or 18C.

Of course, in the winter months, households may need to keep this temperature higher to stay warm, but it is ideal if you’re out of the home.

The expert also recommended letting some fresh air into the home by opening windows regularly. This can help if you’re struggling to dry washing, as wet washing, which has been drying for too long, can result in odours.

This can help banish unpleasant odours in the home, improve air quality, and reduce condensation and mould.

A dehumidifier can also be a great investment if you suffer from humidity and condensation issues. The nifty devices can help to draw in excess moisture, perfect if you’re drying washing inside the home.

To prevent mould in your wardrobe, make sure clothing is fully dry before putting it away. If mould is already present on your walls, or in your wardrobe, you can remove it with a white vinegar and water mixture.
