Iceland is the latest retail chain to announce a store closure as the UK high street’s woes continue.
The supermarket brand – with 900 stores across the country and known for its affordable prices – will close one of its branches this week.
Iceland will close its Derbion Shopping Centre branch in Derby and relocate it to nearby London Road.
Locals had mixed reactions upon hearing the news.
One user online said: “Derby city centre is dire.”
Another added: “A lot further for people to carry their shopping to the bus station.”
In recent months, Iceland has closed several branches, including its Welling branch in London.
Branches at Shenley Road, Borehamwood and Alphington Road Retail Park, Exeter, were also cut.
However, Iceland also plans to open 20 Iceland and Food Warehouse stores before the end of April.
With inflation again rising and the economy continuing to splutter, some high-street brands have announced closures.
According to research by The Centre for Retail Research, 13,479 stores from various retailers were closed in 2024.
Independent shops made up 11,341 of those closures, while 2,138 were from bigger retailers.
Over half of stores were closed because of insolvency proceedings, the research added.
