Last month, I travelled to a beautiful Spanish island in search of some sun as the weather began to turn in Scotland. As a devoted summer person, I made it my mission this year to prolong the warmer season for as long as I could get away with. Going away in autumn is key if you wish to do the same, and some major pros come with taking a holiday in October.
I decided Spain was to be my country of choice for a week-long getaway – and I have no regrets. Spain is one of my favourite countries; there are so many parts of it that I absolutely adore. The weather is always pleasant, year-round, Spanish food is the best cuisine in my opinion and the people are so friendly. I have been at least 10 times now, mainly spending time in the south or in Barcelona, and there are still more parts I’d like to venture to. But this time I decided to check somewhere new off the list, so I travelled to Majorca, with a curiosity to see what the hotspot for British tourists was really like.
With Majorca being one of the most popular destinations for UK holidayers, I expected it to be bustling with Brits abroad, but that was not what I found. While there was a presence of British people around, it was largely a mix of nationalities. Alongside this, the whole place as a whole felt pretty quiet. The beach for example, was not mobbed at all yet there was still a nice atmosphere. It was the perfect level of busy for me. So I’d recommend travelling their during autumn rather than summer if crowds are not your thing.
As well as this, the landscapes, and general views were extremely beautiful. I was luck enough to experience some beautiful sunsets during my time there. The view of the island from the roof off my hotel Innside by Meliá Calviá Beach was also stunning. The sea was crystal blue and so clean, it was surprisingly a lovely temperature. The weather was also spot on at 25C for the most part.
The variety of places to eat is also great and there are several beachfront spots that give off the classic Brit abroad vibe, as well as some more upmarket choices. If going out is your thing, there are plenty of options, some busier than others, but the strip is tucked away enough that you won’t encounter it unless you wish to.
However, there are always going to be a couple cons with any trip. Travelling during off-season although means quieter streets and more room to breathe will also mean that not everything is open. In this case, not many things were shut but the beachfront was certainly quieter on the weekdays. Another con is that travelling outside of the UK during these months of autumn is always going to end in a case of serious holiday blues on return to cold weather – but that is surely just an indicator of how good a time you had.
In any case, I would highly recommend a visit to Majorca if you haven’t been before or are looking for a getaway in the colder months, you won’t regret it.
