‘I visited best ranked beach in the world and one thing blew me away’ | Travel News | Travel

Have you ever dreamt about visiting a beach with white clean sand and bright blue waters? This was something one man decided to do, as he went on to visit one of the best beaches in the world.

While the UK has a large number of beaches, seeing as it’s an island, most of our beaches consists of pebbles rather than sand, and darker and often murky water instead of the bright blue sea seen in more tropical parts of the world.

It’s worth noting there are some beaches like this in the UK, particularly in Cornwall, however it often lacks the tropical heat and sunshine to fully enjoy it. So what does it take to truly make a beach perfect?

This is something that Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2025 list explained, as it named one beach in Queensland, Australia the best beach in the world.

To see if it really was as good as they said, a couple named Dan and Janie decided to go to Whitehaven Beach in Queensland to find out why it had been named the best beach in the world.

“Look at this,” Dan said as he moved the camera around to show off the idyllic looking beach. “Ranked in the top five in the world apparently.”

While the beach looked perfect, with its white sandy beachfront, bright blue waters, and the beaming sun on the blue sky, there was one detail about the beach that truly blew him away.

As he moved the camera down to show the sand, he told his viewers to listen as he walked on the sand. As he took some steps on the sand, a squeaking sound was heard as he took each step.

Later in the video, he is also heard playing with the noisy sand as he moved his hand back in forth in it, making it squeak with each movement.

And while the video got over 1.3 million views on TikTok, most of the viewers shared their amazement at the squeaky sand.

“Why does the sand squeak?!” one person ask, which was echoed by hundreds of other viewers.

The phenomenon in question has a long list of names, but is best known as ‘singing sand’ or whistling sand, and is not fully understood scientifically.

It happens because of the friction between uniform, nearly-spherical, clean, and dry quartz sand grains which causes them to vibrate and rub against each other at a specific frequency, creating the sound.

Because the conditions for squeaking sand are so specific, it’s a rare phenomenon found only on certain beaches with the right type of sand and environmental factors.

However, not everyone was impressed by this, as another person commented: “I’m sorry but I’m too sensory triggered to even stand on that sand. Beautiful yes! Squeakiness no chance!”
