‘I visited 16 countries in Africa – this one is my favourite with the friendliest people’ | Africa | Travel

One of those is Nicky Kelvin, a travel expert from The Points Guy UK, who has visited 16 countries across Africa. He told the Express that Malawi was his favourite.

He said: “While it might be a little bit trickier to reach than some destinations, don’t let this stop you. Malawi was my favourite country on a very long winding journey through southern and eastern Africa.

“Lake Malawi is stunning and the people are the kindest and friendliest I’ve ever encountered. Music fans should time their visit for the Lake of the Stars festival, this year taking place in October.”

Malawi is often called the “Warm Heart of Africa” and is known for welcoming visitors.

According to the country’s embassy website: “Malawians are arguably some of the friendliest people in the world and every visitor will be welcomed with a hearty smile on arrival in Malawi.”

Many people head straight for Lake Malawi, which is so large it looks like the sea.

It has calm waters, sandy beaches, and colourful fish and is ideal for swimming, snorkelling or kayaking.

But there’s plenty to see inland too. Liwonde National Park is one of the top places for wildlife, with elephants, hippos, antelope and hundreds of bird species. There are also boat safaris along the Shire River.

Majete Wildlife Reserve offers the chance to spot the Big Five, including lions, elephants and rhinos – while Mount Mulanje is popular with hikers.

Nyika National Park has rolling grasslands and zebras, and Zomba Plateau is known for its walking trails and panoramic views.

Even the capital, Lilongwe, is worth a visit. It has busy markets, colourful shops, and a rescue centre for animals.

All in all, Malawi is a great choice for people looking for a relaxed, friendly and memorable trip in Africa.
