A chocolate lover has shared their verdict one of the UK’s most expensive chocolate eggs on offer for Easter this year.
Easter is almost here and that means the supermarkets are filled with delicious, chocolate treats – and plenty to choose from. But with so much choice, it can be hard to decipher which Easter eggs are the best.
Kids are typically happy with a cheap, bargain Easter egg, but adults might like to tuck into something more luxurious for their Easter treat. This year brands have gone all out with their creations – from M&S’ viral Custard Cream Easter egg to Terry’s Chocolate launching their own crème egg to rival the classic Cadbury’s Crème Egg.
Viral food reviewer Carmie Sellito stumbled into Harrods, London, earlier this week and was stunned by the prices of the luxury Easter eggs in the iconic store’s chocolate hall. He said he was “really surprised” after trying the Venchi Chocolate BacioDiDama egg, priced at £68. It has creamy caramel chocolate on the outside and dark, crunchy chocolate on the inside.
The food reviewer, who has previously reviewed some of Harrods most expensive items, conducted a taste test to see if it is really worth paying just short of £70 for one Easter egg.
Carmie said: “Can I just say, this is the nicest looking Easter egg I’ve ever seen. Look at the box, the details are mad.” Pulling out the chocolate treat from the box, Carmie appeared impressed that it had a case around it so it does not smash. “That’s actually really smart,” he said.
Carmie added: “The woman serving me told me that this chocolate is really famous in Italy. Me being Italian, I had to buy it.” Showing off the look of the treat, he added: “Look at that. Look at the detail. It smells amazing.”
He dove straight in and bit of the top of the egg. “What? Oh my! Inside the chocolate egg are these little chocolates attached to it. These are like hazelnut biscuit. Not to mention, the chocolate around the egg is also so tasty.
“No wonder it’s so popular in Italy. It tastes amazing.” He was so impressed that he offered a 9.5 rating out of 10, and said he will be returning to Harrods to pick up another Venchi egg for his parents.
But some did not seem as impressed in the comments of his video, as one said: “I would have expected a posher box for 68 quid.” “Sorry, no chocolate is worth that,” commented another. “Couldn’t justify paying that,” added another. Another laughed and said: “And here’s me refusing to pay £3.45 for an egg.”
One other said they “absolutely need this”. “Lot of money for Easter egg but if you can afford it go for it,” pointed out another. “Looks like it’s worth every penny,” said another.
The treat is so popular that it is out of stock of the Venchi website. It is not available on the Harrods website, but like Carmie, you should be able to find the Easter egg in store.
Venchi describes the egg as “an invitation to dive into authentic delight, discovery and blossoming emotion”. The chocolate brand say this treat is for a sensory journey through nature and traditional flavours. “A mouthwatering encounter between a crunchy glutenfree biscuit, creamy caramel chocolate and dark chocolate,” Venchi added.
Another luxury London store, Fortnum and Mason are offering a trio of floral Easter Eggs for a whopping £60, as well as six praline eggs for £30. If you really want to treat yourself, the Spring Hamper is available, but will set you back £200.
For alternative luxury Easter eggs, there is The Easter Sleekstar from Hotel Chocolat for £29.95, a Marks and Spencer Easter Treat Letterbox Gift for £25.
