I tried 4 calorie snack filled with antioxidants and it changed my life

I have always liked a pickle, but I didn’t realise I was a pickle girly until now.

Kühne is a brand that has been making veggie products since 1722, so if anyone knows how to pickle, it should be them.

Looking to promote their Gourmet Selection, Kühne sent me some to taste test, and now I don’t think I can ever eat a supermarket pickle again.

I cracked open three varieties of the Gourmet Selection: Gourmet Selection with Chili, Gourmet Selection with Herbs and the Gourmet Selection with Honey.

Each jar just got better and better. The balance of flavours in the Kühne pickling water is elite.

While you may think of adding pickles to a dish to give it a tang, these come already complete with a fully rounded flavour offering.

Crisp, but not hard, the pickles themselves have the perfect crunch, clearly harvested at the right time – something Kühne say they pride themselves on, stating they “maintain long-standing, close partnerships with farmers” and some are in the 3rd generation.

The Gourmet Selection with Herbs has a lovely fragrant and herby taste, while the vinegar is tangy but not sharp and bitter.

The Gourmet Selection with Chili gives a nice little kick on the tongue; it is not overpowering, so you can still taste the lovely freshness of the pickle and mild enough for you to eat more than one.

But for me, it is the Gourmet Selection with Honey which stands out. The subtle sweetness from the honey is perfect with the vinegar, giving these pickles a more sweet and sour umami flavour I never thought possible from a jar of pickles.

This makes them the perfect snack and the honey ones are nearly all gone and I am having to plan my next fix.

Pickles range from around four to 11 calories each, depending on size and what is used in the pickling water.

They are also said to be a good source of protective antioxidant nutrients, as do all fruit and veg.

Nutritionist Kerry Torrens writes on BBC Good Food: “Fruit and veg are valuable sources of protective nutrients – including beta-carotene and vitamin C – known as antioxidants.

“These help the body manage a damaging process called oxidation, which has been linked to a number of conditions, including cancer and diabetes.

“Pickles are useful sources of these antioxidants, especially when combined with spices.

“Pickling liquid is also a rich source of water-soluble vitamins, including vitamin C – and, when spices like chilli, fenugreek and turmeric are included in the liquid, the vitamin C levels appear to be even better.”

Tasting the Kühne pickles first was a mistake, because when I tried other pickles alongside, they were like ash in my mouth. I found the Serious Pig snacking pickles to smell odd and sour, Tesco’s own brand gherkins were bland and hard, the Waitrose Cocktail Gherkins were bitter, and the Mallie Cornichons were so sharp they almost made my eyes water.

I needed some of those Kühne honey pickles as a palate cleanser. These pickles have really changed my life, I can never eat a supermarket gherkin again.

And if you do get them, order all your McDonald’s burgers without pickles and add a Kühne chili one instead to elevate your takeaway.

You can get your hands on the best pickles I have ever eaten at Ocado for £3.55 (pricey, but so worth it) or stock up with packs of eight from Amazon for £25.59.
