The sun is starting to set over Brooklyn, but Under the K Bridge Park is just waking up. It’s the final night of Levity and Tape B’s Summer Program Tour, a bass-heavy run that took outdoor venues across the U.S. by storm and spirits are high.
People of all ages pour in wearing mushroom hair clips, custom Levity jerseys, shiny face glitter and inflatable giraffes. Someone in the corner is blowing bubbles. The bass hasn’t even peaked yet, but the crowd is already living in its own little world.
At 7:45 sharp, Effin comes on, kicking off his powerhouse set with a bang. Deep dubstep beats flood the space immediately while our high-energy performer bobs up and down to his own music. He quickly draws a crowd, with many grabbing their friends, drinks nearly spilling out of hands and banging their heads back and forth against an imaginary wall.
Then, right before 9, Tape B takes the stage and the entire pit seems to drop with him. At first, there’s a little confusion as beats meld together rather unceremoniously. Just then, the decorated turntablist addresses the situation apologizes for a technical glitch. Right after that, the bass hits so hard it feels less like something you hear and more like something trying to climb out of your chest. Finally, the lasers come on, and the crowd snaps fully awake.
His 60-minute set is action-packed with fan favorites like “Underneath Your Skin” and “Word Scramble,” collaborations with Zeds Dead and Subtronics. Visuals include Tape B’s signature tape graphic melting and molding, almost like psychedelic euphoria. Each time the cassette melts across the screen, someone nearby seems to either scream about the visuals, reach for their friend or fully surrender to whatever kind of trip — drug-induced or not — they are having.
It’s a majestic sight to behold.
An hour in, Effin joins Tape B on stage for his final three bops before Tape B signs off with, “I’ll see you in one hour,” alluding to the back-to-back set Tape B has planned with Levity for the finale.
With that, the show rolls on.
Levity’s intro is pure theater. Words flash on the back screen before the music even starts, introducing the three artists that make up the group. Meanwhile, the lyrics start repeating — “I just want to feel your love tonight” — and the trio rushes the stage as the Levity logo pulses behind them.
More lyrics appear onscreen before the D R O P. Before we know it, the lasers go every which way and smoke spreads. It’s officially game over.
Under The K Bridge’s crowd loses itself in the beat, keeping the party going with every head-banging ritual in their arsenal. Even in the chaos, there is a strange sweetness to the proceedings. Rave sprouts fall off people’s heads and are immediately returned to their owners. In a crowd built around head-banging, bass drops and bodies moving in every direction, those little moments are what stand out. Rave sprouts are a way to build community and show positivity and inclusivity like exchanging kandi bracelets, which is what makes them so special.
We’re not done yet, though. The marathon concert keeps going, with each drop bigger and better than the last. Levity makes sure to add a few melodic moments throughout their set as a reset for ravers to take a deep breath and keep the party grooving. Hits include “Neon Soul,” “By My Side” and a hypnotic “Hey Jude” mix to close out the one-hour set.
Just when we thought we’d seen it all, Tape B is welcomed back on stage, and the B2B set gets underway.
When they pair up, the EDM icons skew more pop-centric taking “Make It Bun Dem” by Damien Marley and Skrillex and “Temperature” to center stage as the first few songs played. They ended with a “Beauty and a Beat” remix that had the crowd roaring. You’d think three hours of dubstep would thin out the crowd. It doesn’t. If anything, people were still asking where they could find the afterparty.
Which, by the way, there was one.
Both Levity and Tape B headed over to the Brooklyn Steel afterparty, keeping the party going until the wee hours of the morning.
Yes, when the sun started to rise, Levity and Tape B were far from calling it a night.

What is a dubstep concert like?
Inclusive.
The culture is built around positivity and strength. No one is pushing or spilling drinks on you. It is all safe. If one girl accidentally bumps into you, they’ll immediately ask if you’re OK. Yes, people pass out in all corners from their drug paraphernalia hitting them too hard but once that happens, tons of ravers swarm, finding ways to help .
That is what keeps pulling me back to dubstep: the community, the music and the strange, loving chaos of it all. Tape B and Levity don’t just light up Under the K Bridge Park. They leave the bass lingering in your chest long after you walk out.
