'I read the one book you should read before you die – I got chills at the end'

This novel is one that has an eerie link to the present day and readers recognise how creepy this can be.

One person on Goodreads who read the novel said: “I got the chills so many times toward the end of this book. It completely blew my mind. It managed to surpass my high expectations AND be nothing at all like I expected.”

If you haven’t read this classic book which has inspired many TV shows, plays, films and works of art – you should get yourself to the library now.

George Orwell’s 1984 remains one of the most chilling and important novels of the 20th century.

First published in 1949, its depiction of a totalitarian regime where surveillance is constant, truth is manipulated, and individuality is crushed resonates with modern-day readers.

Set in a dystopian future, the novel follows Winston Smith, a low-ranking member of the oppressive Party.

Living under the watchful eye of Big Brother, Winston secretly begins to question the regime and seeks truth and freedom in a world designed to erase both.

As he starts a forbidden love affair and dares to rebel, the consequences become inevitable and harrowing.

The novel was featured on a Goodreads list of the top 100 books to read before you die.

Another reader, Amanda, wrote: “I’ve put off writing a review for 1984 because it’s simply too daunting to do so.

“I liked 1984 even better after a second reading (bumping it up from a 4 star to a 5 star) because I think that, given the complexity of the future created by Orwell, multiple readings may be needed to take it all in.

“I thought it was genius the first time and appreciated that genius even more the second time.”

If you’re looking for a gripping book to read next, this could be the one for you.
