It’s safe to say Jonjo Shelvey’s career has been a rollercoaster ride. From representing England at youth level and earning a big money move to Liverpool, to playing in the third-tier of UAE football aged just 33 years old. Few other players can lay claim to such an up-and-down career.
Shelvey first caught the eye while playing for Charlton Athletic, where he became the club’s youngest-ever player in 2008, aged just 16. Two years later, still as a teenager, the Englishman put pen to paper on a move to Liverpool, where he was tipped to inherit the Reds’ midfield crown from legendary star Steven Gerrard.
Charlton chairman Richard Murray said at the time of the £1.7million deal: “It’s with the greatest reluctance that we have accepted an offer for Jonjo from Liverpool. No club likes to lose such a talented prospect, but the overall package is one we couldn’t refuse, and one which was very attractive to Jonjo.
“As a club, we have never stood in the way of any of our young players moving to ‘bigger’ clubs, and this also applies to Jonjo. Liverpool are going to develop him over the next few years to be a top player, and I can’t think of a better place for him to go.”
It didn’t work out at Liverpool, as Shelvey managed just under 70 appearances across his three-year stint, with moves to the likes of Swansea, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest following thereafter. That’s where Shelvey’s career begins to go off script a little, with the former Three Lions ace leaving England to spend time at Turkish sides Caykur Rizespor and Eyupspor.
A brief return to England earlier this year resulted in four appearances for Burnley, before Shelvey signed for his third club of 2025, joining Arabian Falcons in the UAE’s third tier. Shelvey linked up with fellow former professional and Englishman Harry Agombar, who is in charge of the side that were formed in 2023.
It’s a far cry from what was once touted for Shelvey, with the Romford-born midfielder now competing in tired-looking stadiums in front of desolate crowds. And even worse than that, in one of his first appearances as an Arabian Falcons, Shelvey sent a penalty into row Z. Or at least he would’ve done if the stadium had any actual terraces to begin with!
