French toast is a popular breakfast dish made by soaking slices of bread in a mixture of beaten eggs and milk. It is often made using stale bread that would otherwise go to waste. Mary Berry has shared a plethora of breakfast recipes throughout her career, including this French toast one, which can be made in four simple steps.
The recipe notes on BBC Food said: “Use whatever staple white bread you have in the bread bin for this fabulous French toast. It makes a brilliant weekend brunch drenched in honey with fresh berries.”
Ingredients (to serve two):
Two free-range eggs
One teaspoon of golden caster sugar
Pinch of salt
Pinch of ground cinnamon
Half a teaspoon of vanilla extract
125ml of milk
White bread
Butter, for frying
To serve:
Honey
Maple syrup
Fruits, including berries
Method:
Start by beating together the eggs and adding the sugar, salt, cinnamon, vanilla and milk until combined.
Dip the bread pieces into the mixture and let them soak on each side for a couple of seconds.
Melt butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Once melted, add the bread to the pan.
Fry on each side until golden brown, and then serve with whatever you fancy. I served mine with maple syrup, icing sugar, and some kiwi on the side.
The French toast is absolutely delicious. The golden caster sugar creates a lovely caramel taste, and the cinnamon and vanilla add a wonderful sweetness.
I love how easy it is to make, and it’s super customisable, and can also be enjoyed with berries, streaky bacon or on its own.
