A man was left gobsmacked by the price of his Benidorm fish and chips. The travel lover, known online as HarryTokky, ventured to Ray’s Chippy 2 for what may be the “best” fish and chips he’s unearthed in the sunny resort so far.

The TikTok creator couldn’t wait to share his culinary journey with a legion of followers; yet, the cost of his meal took him by surprise. In a video that’s now stirring up appetites and astonishment alike, Harry confessed he’d heard this spot touted as the top chippy in the locale.

Keen to critique, Harry sampled a small cod with chips, sided with curry sauce and a fizzy beverage – a feast that looked “absolutely amazing.” He gleefully reported: “We’ve got the small cod and chips, we’ve got the gravy as well. No, we’ve got the curry sauce, my apologies. Let’s get plenty of salt on there.

“Oh the batter is incredible, super crunchy. Beautiful, beautiful. Honestly, it’s that hot, I cannot even eat it. I’m going to have to wait a few minutes for it to cool down but, honestly, this is so tasty.

“I mean, if you are coming to Benidorm, you’ve got to check this place out. It’s incredible. Right guys, I have just finished my meal, and I have no other words other than exceptional.”

After his dining experience, he gleefully informed viewers that the meal cost only €13.65, which is approximately equal to £11.68, calling it an “absolute bargain.” He wrapped up his glowing review by calling the restaurant a “secret hidden gem” and lavished praise on the exquisite food quality.

Fans flocked to the comments section, with one saying: “Was there two weeks ago – best chippy in Benidorm.” Another responded with: “It looks lovely – can’t wait to try it.”

A third fan planned a future visit, noting: “I’ll check it out when I’m over in September. I’ve heard it’s the best in Beni.” Meanwhile, another concurred: “I was there last week – spot on and great price too.”

In a flurry of recommendations, regular visitors did not hold back in sharing their favourite spots for fish and chips in Benidorm, mentioning places like Dave’s Chippy, Planet Benidorm and John and Joseph’s among the top picks.

For a spot of context, it’s worth reflecting that on UK shores, the average punter parts with about £9.88 for their regular fish and chips fix, though prices oscillate wildly with Londoners sometimes forking out as much as £22.50 for heftier portions.

In West Yorkshire, it’s reported that you could bag the beloved dish for a mere £6.70 for a smaller portion. However, portion sizes can differ significantly, with some shops serving a regular fish up to 12oz and chips up to 20oz.

Unbeknownst to many, the cost of cod and haddock has soared by 75% in the past year due to supply chain disruptions and global events such as the Ukraine conflict. Despite the potential impact on consumers’ wallets, it seems Brits still relish their fish and chips.

Based on average prices, a traditional cod and chips will set you back approximately £10.92. Conversely, the average price of haddock and chips is marginally higher at £11.13.

Smaller meal portions typically range from £5 to £8, while larger portions can cost around £11. If you’re seeking high-end fish and chips, the price can fluctuate between £25 to £80.
