'I bought a PS5 Pro – a rare Sony sale now makes it cheaper'

After months of hype, the PS5 Pro was released at the end of last year, offering boosted features and storage to Sony’s PS5 and PS5 Slim models. Now might be the chance for gamers to jump on the console, as Sony has launched its Days of Play sale, where consoles, controllers, and games are discounted in price.

The price ef the PS5 Pro console has been knocked down to £659.99 for a limited time, until June 11 – that’s a £45 saving. The original PS5 slim console is also on offer, now £389.99 down from £479.99.

There are also other deals that gamers can pick up, including the Dualsense Edge Wireless controller and the PS VR2 with Horizon: Call of the Mountain for £354.99, down from £399.  Sony will also let shoppers trade in their old PS4 or PS5 console to help knock money off a new device. The company has teamed up with BackMarket so dealhunters can save money by trading in.

There are other alternatives to consider. The Nintendo Switch 2 is on the horizon for shoppers wanting a new console, and Nintendo is selling it right here. Amazon is also selling the Nintendo Switch OLED for £240 if the newest console isn’t in your budget.

I reviewed the PS5 Pro when it was first released, and despite its high price, my partner and I were impressed. One game I tried was Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which honestly looked awful when I first played it. It had a blur that made me feel like my glasses weren’t strong enough, however, the PS5 Pro has completely changed how this game looks.

Instead of a slick blur in the distance, there’s now an option that allows you to output an upscaled 4K resolution with 60fps, whereas the standard console allowed only 4K 30 or a lower resolution at 60fps. PS5 Pro eliminates that, and the game looks fantastic. Background textures and imagery look gorgeous, but Final Fantasy isn’t the only game that looks great.

Horizon Forbidden West got some great upgrades. Compared to the inconsistent FPS drops I got with the original PS5, FPS drops are now non-existent and the image quality ‘pops’ far more compared to the old console. It feels much closer to games on my high-end PC rather than playing older console – one of my biggest gripes with the original PS5.

Should shoppers spend close to £659 on the PS5 Pro? Personally, I believe the majority of people still probably don’t need the console, unless gamers need the best possible frame rates and resolution to justify the high price.

Do you really value the best possible-looking games and framerates when you play your PS5? And do you play on it enough to make the time investment worth it? If the answer is yes to both of these, I would consider buying the PS5 Pro.
