With a new month comes an exciting new array of movies dropping in cinemas and on streaming platforms alike. This month sees the release of many, which look to be big hitters. One of which stars Cillian Murphy as a devoted school teacher, in a new type of role for the actor, Steve is no doubt going to be one of the most talked about films of October. Then there is Jacob Elordi’s Frankenstein will be released in selected cinemas ahead of a Netflix release. Collin Farrell has only just released A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, but the actor is also starring in A Ballad of a Small Player, directed by Edward Berger. Here is a little more about my top three films you must watch coming out in October.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Steve follows Cillian Murphy as a devoted headteacher, Steve, at a troubled reform school over 24 intense hours. The film, an adaptation of Max Porter’s novel Shy, chronicles Steve’s desperate efforts to save the school from closure and his own battle with mental health, paralleled by the struggles of a violent, self-destructive student named Shy. The film explores themes of mental health, addiction, suicide, and the breakdown of essential services, culminating in a powerful portrayal of compassion amidst despair.”
Ballad of a Small Player is a British psychological thriller film directed by Edward Berger, written by Rowan Joffé, and based on the 2014 novel The Ballad of a Small Player by Lawrence Osborne. It stars Colin Farrell, Fala Chen, Deanie Ip, Alex Jennings, and Tilda Swinton. The film’s plot is as follows: “When his past and his debts start to catch up with him, a high-stakes gambler laying low in Macau encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation.”
The film’s synopsis reads: “Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.” Frankenstein stars Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Lauren Collins, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz.
