Hydrangeas thrive when they are planted beside another colourful and vibrant flower. Hydrangeas are one of the most beautiful flowers you can have in your garden, and they are a popular choice for British homeowners. They are relatively easy to grow, and once they bloom, they fill your garden with colour. To make sure your hydrangeas grow to their full potential and to make them look as exciting as they can be, there is one flower you should pair it with.

According to a gardening expert who gave their top tips to Martha Stewart, one of the best companion plants for hydrangeas is alliums, and there are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, alliums are an excellent pest repellent. They are a member of the onion family, so they have quite a strong scent that deters pests like aphids. Protecting your flowers from pests and diseases should be a priority because they can cause your plants to be damaged beyond repair.

Meanwhile, alliums are also great for attracting pollinators. This is essential for a flower to thrive. A garden that is full of bees and butterflies is a garden that will thrive, and one that will be bursting with colour in the summer months once everything has fully bloomed.

Alliums, like hydrangeas, can bloom in a variety of colours such as purple, blue, white, pink and yellow so they perfectly complement hydrangeas in the garden. So, not only do they have a practical use, alliums are also aesthetically pleasing when they are planted beside hydrangeas.

Meanwhile, alliums require similar conditions to hydrangeas when it comes to growing. They should be planted in well-drained soil in a place that gets at least six hours of sunshine per day.

According to gardening experts, there are a number of perennials that go great wuth hydrangeas in your outdoor space. The list includes coral bells, coneflowers and ornamental grasses.

Hydrangeas can also be grown beside bush and shrub plants as roses, butterfly bushes and dwarf pines. When you are selecting a companion plant for your hydrangeas, it is important to choose a plant that requires the same growing conditions, such as soil and light.

Gardeners are urged to prune back their hydrangeas now so that they bloom beautifully for summer. Spring time is the best for cutting off dead leaves so that other blooms can thrive.
