Huge iPhone, iPad and MacBook change may be confirmed tomorrow – all you need to know

All eyes will be on Apple tomorrow night with the US technology giant holding its yearly WWDC Developers Conference. The major event is taking place at the US firm’s Apple Park HQ in Cupertino and we expect a raft of important announcements to be made. WWDC may not sound all that thrilling for consumers but this is not a keynote anyone should miss with Apple always using this global showcase to reveal what new features are coming soon to the iPhone, MacBook, iPad and Apple Watch and there could be massive changes ahead.

Rumours are rife that the rule book is about to be ripped up with Apple making a major change for the future.

So what might be different and when will you get it?

According the the latest whispers, Apple might switch up the naming convention of its operating systems. All of the previous updates have jumped in numerical order. That means iOS 15 became iOS 16 which then changed to iOS 17 and last year it was renamed iOS 18. You get the picture.

However, it seems that Apple may want to simplify things with Bloomberg reporting that all operating systems will soon get the same name that adjusts to the year ahead.

So, you could see iOS 26, iPadOS 26, watchOS 26 and macOS 26 all unveiled in the next few hours,

This does make sense as it can be tricky for consumers to know if they have the latest version of Apple’s software on their phone. It will also bring everything in line with one another so you won’t have watchOS 11, iOS 18 and macOS 15 which can be a bit confusing.

If this new naming system comes into force, it will also be way easier to see how far behind devices are on updates.

Other changes expected tomorrow could include a redesign to home screens, new AI features being added and improved security.

Apple sometimes even throws in a few surprises and launches new MacBooks or iPads at this global event.

Luckily, there’s not too long to wait with the major keynote starting at 6pm on June 9.

Express.co.uk will bring you all the news live, so watch this space.

“We’re excited to mark another incredible year of WWDC with our global developer community,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations.

“We can’t wait to share the latest tools and technologies that will empower developers and help them continue to innovate.”
