Torbay, known as the English Riviera for its scenic coastline, mild climate and family-friendly resorts, has received a major financial boost after thousands of visitors descended on Paignton to watch the Red Arrows and other aircraft at this year’s English Riviera Airshow. The event, held over three days, attracted large crowds and is estimated to have brought in at least £5 million to the local economy.

Paignton, one of the three key towns that make up Torbay, along with Torquay and Brixham, served as the centre of the action, with Paignton Green offering perfect views of aerobatic displays including the famous Red Arrows and the RAF Typhoon Display Team.

The English Riviera Airshow, which wrapped up its three-day event on Sunday, attracted thousands of visitors to Paignton Green, with fans of aviation turning out in force to see breathtaking performances.

The event, which is free to attend, has been hailed a major success by local businesses and tourism officials. The influx of visitors has provided a much-needed boost to the local economy.

Carolyn Custerson, chief executive of the English Riviera Business Improvement District, said the airshow is a powerful economic driver for the region.

“The airshow is going to be worth at least £5 million to Torbay’s visitor economy and we see a great return on investment,” she told BBC.

“For every pound we invest, we see £15 returned. We’re now in a good position to take the event forward.”

Local traders, too, reported brisk business across the weekend. James Guthrie from Torbay Gin said sales were particularly strong on Saturday, crediting the large crowds and the captivating aerial displays for creating an electric atmosphere along Paignton Green.

Councillor Jackie Thomas, Torbay Council’s cabinet member for tourism, culture and events, highlighted the significance of holding the airshow at a time when similar events, such as those in Bournemouth and Teignmouth, have been called off or face uncertainty due to funding constraints.

She said the ability to maintain and deliver such a high-calibre event demonstrates Torbay’s commitment to its visitor economy.

Organisers and business leaders now hope the success of this year’s airshow will pave the way for future investment and cement Paignton’s position as one of the UK’s premier seaside destinations for aviation events.
